Time to Afford Calculator

Enter a price, your income, expenses, and work schedule to see how long you would need to work to afford it—before and after the costs you enter.

Formula

Working minutes at gross pay = price ÷ hourly gross pay. Working minutes from disposable income = price ÷ hourly pay after expenses. Working days = those minutes ÷ minutes in a working day. Calendar days = working days ÷ days per week × 7.

Example

A $1,200.00 purchase, with $4,800.00 income and $1,600.00 expenses at 5 days of 8 hours, takes 43 hours 20 minutes of work at the gross rate and 65 hours if only the money left after expenses is used.

Assumptions

Gross time spends the hourly value of pay before the expenses you entered. Disposable time spends only income minus those expenses. Calendar time counts weeks of 7 days, not public holidays.

Limits

If income is zero, gross working time is not shown. If income minus expenses is zero or negative, the purchase cannot be covered from what is left, and that line stays blank instead of dividing by zero. Nothing here is a promise about saving or credit.
